The hidden correction is back with a vengeance. On Sunday, Norm Clarke did his infamous correction within a column as if hiding a corrected version is OK. "In Saturday's column, I mistakenly had Gilley's going into the Christian Audigier Nightclub at Treasure Island. It's going into the combined space formerly occupied by Mist nightclub and Francesco's Italian restaurant." On Saturday when we read his column, we thought it was very odd. http://www.lvrj.com/news/wynn-las-vegas-club-named-no-1-83704997.html His Saturday column was all about how Las Vegas has so many of the top grossing nightclubs in the nation. We actually were surprised because he put the club Christian Audigier in bold type at #28. When we read Saturday's column we couldn't understand why Audigier was singled out for bold type. Then he did his segue into the news about Gilley's and mentioned it was going into the Audigier spot. Curious. Why would Phil Ruffin wipe out one of the top grossing clubs in the nation, even if it is for another likely successful venture? This not only deserved an actual correction, readers deserve an explanation about why Clarke put special emphasis on Audigier in the first place. Do clubs get bold-faced type depending on the access to information they provide Clarke or does Clarke do it in exchange for more than just information? At any rate, Clarke's hidden correction hasn't gone unnoticed by our tally. Nor do we fail to notice his bold-type hype. On Saturday, the RJ had to correct a Friday business story. "The first name and title of the chief executive and chairman of Mutual of Omaha Bank was incorrect in the Business section of Friday’s edition. His name is Jeffrey Schmid." This stems from a report by business reporter John G. Edwards. Now, we're not saying Edwards' error is any less minor than Clarke's. But let's talk about reality here. Edwards boffed a CEO's name and full title. Clarke killed an entire nightclub, and one of the top grossing ones in the nation. On Sunday, the RJ also had to correct yet another Jane Ann Morrison column. "Amber Candelaria's place of employment was incorrect in Jane Ann Morrison's Saturday column. Candelaria is director of the Family Law Self Help Center at Family Court." Oops. Again, a screw-up that's fairly minor compared to Clarke's, but an error just the same. This only marks Morrison's second of the year, but it's part of an ominous correction tally through the years. |
