And it's quite the fairy tale. http://www.lvrj.com/opinion/don-_x92-t-blame-the-tax-base-96747569.html There's plenty missing from Joecks assertion that the tax base isn't the problem here. Joecks tries to assert we're fine because all starts suffered revenue losses in this recession. Actually, that's not entirely true, but the bigger misinformation Joecks peddles is failing to mention the size of the problem here. This is classic voodoo economics -- use the numbers to trick the "stupid or unfit" to use Joecks' words. Nevada has the worst economy in the nation right now. A $3 billion hole in a $5.5 billion budget is monstrous. And as a percentage of the overall revenue picture, there's no state worse. Not even California. And the reason Nevada may not recover until the end of next year -- is precisely because it has no stable source of revenue. Something has to give when you don't have a broad-based business tax or income tax or high property taxes. In Nevada that means higher sales tax than most places -- and when people aren't buying stuff -- that means we get less revenue from our biggest source of revenue. Joecks can write whatever fairy tale he wants. It's clear the RJ will print it. |

On Sunday, Victor Joecks, gets lots of free parking in the RJ's editorial page monopoly game.
