March came in as a lamb as the Review-Journal sheepishly poked at the end of the special session. After weekend reporting that was not only completely false, but also a bore to read, the RJ limped home with a recap of sorts that proved as confusing as anything else its triumvirate reported over the past week. Here's the ''Flash" the paper sent at 8:07 p.m. Saturday. ![]()
No deal near to solve state budget crisisCARSON CITY -- After meeting for nearly four hours tonight with legislators, Gov. Jim Gibbons said they had yet to reach an agreement to solve the state budget crisis. ---
Now here's the "Flash" the paper sent at 9:16 p.m., completely refuting the earlier breaking news.

Budget deal would cut education by nearly 7 percentState spending on education would be cut by 6.9 percent under a budget deal Democrats and Republicans reached tonight, according to a source who has seen the draft budget document. --
It's not as if the climate in Carson City had changed dramatically within that hour, either.
Other media outlets were reporting in the 8 p.m. hour Saturday that the budget accord had been reached.
The good ones were even telling us what was in it.

It's also amazing how the two Las Vegas papers, packaged together, take such different approaches to the coverage.
Today, the RJ's piece hints that the deal was a done deal. But if you read the actual newspaper, the jump is headlined with news that the governor extended the special session until 5 p.m. today.
Too bad the session was over when the paper hit driveways and doorsteps.
The Las Vegas Sun approach was to preview the 2011 session -- a reasonable angle given the expected lateness of the final vote Sunday.
